The RNA world

Protein vs. RNA:

Protein first:

  • Amino acids can be formed prebiotically
  • Protein polymers are much simpler and therefore can be more easily made

    RNA first:

  • RNA can carry genetic information
  • RNA has the ability to catalyze reactions

    Current thinking: RNA world (that is, RNA first) makes more sense.
