NEW!
No office hours Nov 3 or 4 -- I will be outof town.(3 Nov 2009)
NEW!
Thanks for putting up with our long trip on Saturday.
We did get to see some amazing places. Reminders:
(1) Make sure you know who your partners are for
Meteor Crater; for the Grand Canyon; and for the Sea
Monkeys lab.
(2) Before Saturday's trip I distributed graded labs and
a "CSF" -- course so far -- distribution, with
your score marked. If you didn't get back some
graded labs, I might still have them, or your
partner might have them. Also, on the CSF distribution I indicated
which labs (if any) I have recorded as zero for you.
If you think I've got something wrong, you must let me know.
I could easily have made mistakes, and am not ashamed
to admit it, so let me know if you think I made any mistakes.
(3) If you and your partner don't have your
Sea Monkeys, please let me know.
(4) Upcoming deadlines:
Sea Monkeys oral presentations are this Friday,
October 30, at 3 pm. You should already have started
your experiments!
Your Meteor Crater lab, Grand Canyon lab, and
Sea Monkeys lab are all due by 3 pm
on Tuesday, November 3, 2009.

NEW!
The Grand Canyon lab
is now posted.
It will be a big day, with
lots of driving and a ton of amazing stuff to see.
Please read all the information for this field trip
carefully -- there is a lot to stay on top of. Please
make sure you are prepared for the trip: hats,
good shoes, food, water, etc.
Charles, Sean (are you still in the class?), Ethan, Jessica, Ryan, Mike,
Cody, Kyle, Rhiannon, and Sharon: you are all giving talks on Saturday,
and need to make sure you talk to me about your talk ahead of
time!
(21 Oct 2009)
NEW!
I have posted the assignment for Lab #8,
the Sea Monkeys lab.
Please let me know if you have not found a partneryet for this lab, as you should already be working
on it. Your Sea Monkey lab write-ups are now
due by 3pm on Tuesday, November 3 (same as the
Meteor Crater and Grand Canyon labs).
(21 Oct 2009)
NEW!
I have a bunch of graded papers for this class, and I'll
return them to you if/as/when we ever get together again.

NEW!
Sunday morning at 7:15 am: My last driver option
fell through, so I have to cancel our field
trip this morning. My apologies, but that's how
it goes. There is no field trip today, Sunday,
October 4. We will visit Meteor Crater in
a few weeks' time when we also visit the Grand
Canyon -- a big day trip, but doable.
I will also come to the meeting place this morning
in case some people don't check the web
page.
(4 Oct 2009)
NEW!
I still don't have a second driver for
Sunday's trip, but I'm holding out hope
that one will appear. (It could
still happen.) If not, though, I do have
a backup plan, in which we'll visit Meteor
Crater on the first half of our Grand Canyon
field trip in a few weeks' time.
When I make a final decision I'll let
you know, by web and/or also in
person at 8:45 on Sunday morning.

NEW!
Lab #6 -- Meteor Crater, with a field trip
on Sunday morning -- is now
posted.
(1 Oct 2009)
NEW!
Ryan and Mike, are you guys working on your presentaation
for Sunday's field trip? You should be.
(1 Oct 2009)
NEW!
Lab #5 -- Sandys Canyon, with a field trip
on Friday afteroon -- is now
posted. But this only helps us if we can find a
driver -- see below.
(1 Oct 2009)
NEW!
Is anybody in the clas van certified (that is,
you've taken the NAU van driving course)? Our
scheduled second van driver for Friday's field
trip is sick, so I'm scrambling to find someone
to drive the second van. Please email me if you are
certified and willing to drive -- thanks!

NEW!
Something you might want to know for the Sunset
Crater lab assignment: The volume of a thin
shell -- say, an eggshell, or a thin layer of
lava covering the surface of the Earth -- is equal
to 4 times Pi times the radius of the body (egg, Earth) squared
times the thickness of the shell.
(1 Oct 2009)
NEW!
Lab #4 is now posted.
This field trip is Saturday morning, September 26.
Please read the entire assignment and all web pages
ahead of time. Please wear good (sturdy) shoes.
If you are giving a talk, you need to come talk
to me ahead time -- don't forget.
See you on Saturday.
(24 Sept 2009)
NEW!
Lab #3 is now posted.
It is due by 3 pm on Friday October 2 (one week later
than it said on the original course schedule). You can
find a partner on Saturday morning at our field
trip -- until then, you might want to start looking
over the lab assignment. (24 Sept 2009)
NEW!
The schedule says that lab #3 -- computer imaging lab --
is due this Friday, but that has changed. That lab will
now be due next Friday, October 2. There are
a couple of reasons for this, including the fact that
I forgot to ask you to find a partner for lab #3 when
we all last saw each other. So: We'll meet this Saturday
morning for lab #4 (Sunset Crater). At that time I'll
ask you to find a partner for both the computer imaging
lab and the Sunset Crater lab. Both of those labs will
be due on Friday, October 2.
(22 Sept 2009)
NEW!
Kinna, Adam, Rosie, and Ashley -- you are all giving
talks on this weekend's Sunset Crater field trip.
That means that you need to come talk to me this week
to show me the progress you have made on your talks
and handouts.
(22 Sept 2009)
NEW!
Office hours are only 2-3 pm today (Wednesday,
Sept 9) -- sorry for the inconvenience.
(9 Sept 2009)
NEW!
The assignments for labs 1 and 2
are now posted.
Please make sure you read all of the information on each
lab's web page before coming to that lab. For the rocks
lab, that means reading the assignment and the lecture
notes (I will give that brief lecture at the beginning
of the lab session). For the Scenic skyride lab, that means
reading all of the supporting material, like the itinerary
and looking at the map and so on.
(9 Sept 2009)
NEW!
If you are giving a talk on our first field
(Alex and Ray; Sammy; Jackson and Patrick), you
and your partner need to come see me this week to
discuss how the preparations for your presentation
are going. (8 Sept 2009)
NEW! Our first lab will be on Friday afternoon,
September 11, 3--5 pm, in our regular meeting room.
