Kuiper Belt Object Magnitudes and Surface Colors

 

Since 1995, we've been measuring the optical magnitudes and colors of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). In the Table below, we present our measurements.

Dr. William Romanishin, Dr. Guy Consolmagno, and I thank the NASA Origins of Solar Systems Program, NASA Planetary Astronomy Program, and Space Telescope Science Institute for financial support and the NASA/Keck, Steward, and Vatican Observatories for the consistent allocation of telescope time.

Notes to Table

 

(V)  Brightness of a KBO in green light on the Kron-Cousins photometric system (Landolt 1992, Astronomical Journal, volume 104, page 340).

 

(Hv) Absolute V magnitude, brightness of a KBO at a standard heliocentric distance of 1 AU, a standard geocentric distance of 1 AU, and a Sun-KBO-Earth (phase) angle of 0 degrees. The columns immediately to the right of V, B-V, V-R, and B-R are the uncertainties in the measurements. The uncertainty in Hv is essentially the same as the uncertainty in V. Lightcurves could result in Hv values significantly different than the values given above.

 

% We reported 2004 PY42 has a faint coma (IAUC 8545).

 

@ Both components of the binary KBO 2000 CF105.

 

*1995 QY9, 1998 SM165, 1994 VK8, 1994 TB, Asbolus, and Pholus have no entries for uncertainty in V and Hv because they have lightcurves (see Romanishin and Tegler 1999, Nature, volume 398, page 129; Romanishin et al. 2001, Proceedings National Academy of Sciences, volume 98, page 11863). In these cases, V and Hv represent the average value of the lightcurve.

 

We've made an extensive study of Pholus' lightcurve (see Tegler et al. 2005, Icaurs, volume 175, page 390).
