The Real Galileo Affair and its Effects on Church/Science Relations

Brother Guy Consolmagno
Vatican Observatory Research Group

Abstract

Science is always shaped by what is happening in the broader society that supports it, and the science of the 17th century was no different. Br. Guy Consolmagno, an astronomer at the Vatican Observatory, examines how Galileo's work challenged the science of the day, how it was shaped by the personal ambitions of the main players in the field of natural philosophy at that time, and how Galileo's standing rose and fell with the fortunes of the Spanish during the 30 Years War.
